Orchid Care

General Orchid Care

  • These are general care guidelines to keep your orchid thriving.

  • Orchids will bloom for a period of about 8 -12 weeks. Then, the blooms will fall off. Your orchid is not dead! It is entering the vegetative phase. We recommend cutting the bloom spike just above the lowest node. Keep watering and fertilizing the same as the blooming cycle. Even if it is not blooming, your orchid will continue to provide oxygen and clean the air.

  • To help your orchid to start a new bloom cycle, it needs a 25-degree drop in temperature. (cold fronts)

Environment

  • LIGHTING – Keep orchids in a spot where it will receive some indirect light and shade. Your orchid will also be healthy in a shady exterior environment. Keep your orchid away from direct sunlight, which can dehydrate or burn your plant.

  • TEMPERATURE – The ideal temperature is somewhere between 65 and75 degrees. Keep orchids away from strong drafts, as this can cause your orchid to dehydrate. If this happens, you will notice it first in the bloom, and it will begin to wilt early.

  • HUMIDITY – Ideal humidity is 70-80 percent. However, there is not much you can do about the weather. You may have to adjust your watering.

  • FERTILIZING – We recommend using a 20/20/20 plant food once a month. Fertilizer will give your plants the nutrients it needs to have longer lasting blooms, green leaves, and strong roots.

Watering

  • It is very important to allow roots to completely dry out before watering again.

  • NEVER water a damp orchid.

  • Too much or too little water are often the reason for orchid care issues.

  • Check the roots before watering. Remove the orchid from the decorative ceramic container (keep the plant in the plastic grower pot). Silver/white roots = needs water. Green roots = watering not needed. Black roots = Too much water.

  • DRENCH the roots for about a minute (soak or run under the faucet). DRAIN for 20 or 30 minutes (very important). Return it to the ceramic container. If there is water in the bottom of the container, DISCARD the water immediately. This is death for orchids, as they will continue drink.

  • Avoid using ice cubes to water your orchid—these tropical plants never encounter ice in nature. Some companies suggest it to prevent overwatering, but it's not ideal. Instead, use the recommended DRENCH, DRAIN, AND DISCARD method. If not, give just 1/8 to 1/4 cup of water once a week per orchid.

Orchid Arrangement Watering:

Of course, you do not want to tear apart your lovely arrangement just to water once a week. We have found the easiest way to water your arrangement is to add 1/8 cup of water to each orchid in your arrangement. Pro Tip: deliver the water to each one below the leaves with a turkey baster.
